GNA: Security Council Divisions Affect UNSMIL in Libya

Mohamed Al-Qiblawi, the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of National Accord (GNA), said that statements issued by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) were inconsistent and contained several fallicies.

In an interview with Russian News Agency ‘Sputnik’, Al-Qiblawi pointed out that the GNA was not confident in UNSMIL’s ability to mediate between the parties to the Libyan conflict due to the political divisions concerning Libya in the UN Security Council.

According to Al-Qiblawi, these divisions had a negative effect on the Mission and undermined its efforts.

Al-Qiblawi called on UNSMIL to work “alongside the Government of National Accord in monitoring and documenting the war, as it is the internationally recognized government and the sole representative of the Libyan state.” He stressed that the Mission’s role was to document actions and submit them “to the international organization and bring those responsible to justice.”

“With regard to the [military, political and economic reconciliation] committees that were the result of the Berlin Conference, all of this is now suspended,” said Al-Qiblawi, referring to the three-track process that had been initiated by the UN in order to reach a political solution to the Libyan conflict.
