Luciana Lamorgese, the Italian Interior Minister, stated that the situation in Libya was very different to that of previous years, referring to renewed migration efforts and the COVID-19 epidemic.

“We should think regarding the situation in Libya, where it is very difficult and we fully understand it as a ministry.” Lamorgese said, speaking to Italian news agency ‘NOVA’

In November 2019, the Minister demanded the closure of migrant detention camps in Libya, “The memorandum of understanding that was signed in 2017 with Libya should be changed along with the gradual closure of detention camps in addition to directing responsibility to the United Nations,” it was claimed.
