Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, Antonio Guterres’s Top Pick for UNSMIL Head

Mauritania’s current Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, is at the top of a very long list of potential candidates that the UN is considering to head its support mission to Libya, according to Africa intelligence news website.

In a report, the news website said that the ongoing negotiations over appointing a successor to Ghassan Salamé are now in the final stage, pointing out that Ahmed has topped Antonio Guterres’s pick for United Nations Support Mission to Libya (UNSMIL) head.

His biography

Ismaïl Ould Cheikh Ahmed was born on 9 November 1960 in Nouakchott.
He is a Mauritanian diplomat and politician.
He served as a United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen and was therefore head of the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen from 25 April 2015 to February 2018.

Prior to that, Ahmed served as United Nations Special Representative for the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER)

Ahmed also was the Deputy Special Representative and Deputy Head of UNSMIL.
