UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his grave concern over the use of foreign fighters in the current conflict in Libya.

“We are very concerned by the existence of mercenaries in Libya, and Guterres has repeatedly spoken about this publicly,” said the Secretary General’s spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.

“It is of no help to the people of Libya who are in dire need of political reconciliation, so peace can return to their country”, Dujarric told reporters.

Regarding the appointment of a new UN envoy to Libya to succeed former SRSG Ghassan Salamé, Dujarric said that the process was ongoing and that Acting SRSG Stephanie Williams would continue in her role until a new envoy is appointed.
