Libya’s Prime Minister-designate, Fathi Bashagha held a meeting with the Ambassador of Belgium to Libya, Christophe de Bassompierre. They discussed the political developments in Libya. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister, Ali Al-Qatrani, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hafez Gaddour.

Bashaga stressed the need to support the constitutional process in Cairo. He confirmed that his government will take all steps to support holding Presidential and Parliamentary elections in accordance with the roadmap.

He said that “the government is the product of the agreement of the Libyan Parliament and the High Council of State (HCS) in accordance with the Libyan Political Agreement.” As well as adding that its budget was “approved by the Parliament, and will work to end the political divisions that have affected state institutions.”

Bashagha confirmed his support for the constitutional process held in Cairo. He expressed his hope that this would culminate in a consensus on the electoral basis.

He also valued “the role of the Kingdom of Belgium in supporting the unity and stability of Libya,” expressing his aspiration for “fruitful cooperation and joint work in various fields.”

The statement noted that Ambassador de Bassompierre praised the Libyan government’s adherence to peace, and its rejection of any military escalation that would destabilise the security of Tripoli, and the country as a whole.
