Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed the need for a new UN representative to Libya to be appointed as soon as possible.

In a statement on Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Lavrov held a phone call with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during which they discussed a number of issues, including developments in the Libyan crisis.

Lavrov confirmed “the priority of resolving the issue of managing the UN Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) as soon as possible. Especially given the country’s continued deterioration”, the statement said.

Former UN Special Envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame resigned on March 2 citing health conditions.
