Algeria Stresses Need For Political Solution in Libya

On Tuesday, Algerian Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum reiterated that his country will continue efforts to reduce tensions in Libya and convince the warring parties of the importance of a peaceful political solution.

In press statements, Boukadoum added that Algeria continues to encourage Libyans to return to the negotiating table.

Algeria has been leading diplomatic endeavours in the Libyan conflict and has offered to host dialogue sessions in July to launch a political process to resolve the crisis.

Since the ouster of longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, two seats of power have emerged in Libya: the elected Libyan House of Representatives (HoR) and the Interim Government in eastern Libya, which both support Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA), and the Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli, which is recognised by the United Nations and backed by a loose coalition of armed groups that are primarily supported by Turkey.
