On Thursday, Maltese Prime Minister, Robert Abela arrived in Tripoli on a state visit to discuss areas of bilateral cooperation.

The Prime Minister of the Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba received Abela and his accompanying delegation.

This included the Minister of Foreign Affairs; Ian Borg, the Minister for Home Affairs, Security, Reforms and Equality; Dr Byron Camiller, and the Minister for Environment, Energy, and Enterprise; Miriam Dalli.

The two parties are scheduled to discuss cooperation in the fields of electrical interconnection, health, the environment, marine resources, illegal immigration, and efforts to open airspace.

Earlier today, Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Al-Mangoush and a number of government officials received the Maltese delegation at Mitiga International Airport, Tripoli.

In August 2022, Abela stressed that he will continue to support the Libyan people’s quest for stability and safety.

In brief comments following a meeting with Dbaiba, Abela said that Malta “will continue to offer its support to the country’s citizens. The past days in Libya have been difficult. The peace and stability in the past two years were something we were happy to see. Malta will remain friends with the people of Libya. We will also continue pushing for proactive involvement of the EU.”

On the future of Libya, Abela said “this should only be decided by the citizens and leaders of the country and there should not be any external influences.” He did not elaborate further.

On his part, Dbaiba said he was “grateful” for the warm welcome, and is confident Malta will help Libya through the tougher times.
