The International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace (IPTP) expressed its support for the Egyptian initiative that seeks to resolve the conflict in Libya. It called on all concerned parties and the international community to support the initiative.
This came in a joint statement issued by the IPTP and the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace (GCTP), following an emergency session on Wednesday. This session discussed ways of supporting the initiative and was attended by the Presidents of the GCTP, IPTP, and chairmen of IPTP committees, representing 70 parliaments.
The statement stressed that the initiative, which is backed by major international organisations and governments, realizes the national interest of the Libyan people. It would pave the way for restoring independence and prosperity for all Libyans.
The ‘Cairo Declaration’ was launched last Saturday by the Egyptian President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi. It calls for an immediate ceasefire in Libya, the withdrawal of all foreign fighters and the resumption of peace negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations.
The Initiative also calls for UN-supervised elections, as well as the formation of a new Presidential Council while supporting mechanisms for national dialogue and mobilizing international assistance for local institutions.
