On Sunday, the Health Minister of the Libyan Parliament-designated government, Othman Abdel-Jalil expressed condolences to Greece, after a rescue team was involved in a deadly car accident, while en route to Derna.
During a press conference held on Sunday evening, Abdel-Jalil said the Greek team consisted of 19 individuals. He noted that four of the rescuers died, while 15 were injured. Eight of these are stable, while seven remain in critical condition.
They have all been treated and transported to the Specialized Hospital in Benghazi, according to the minister.
In addition to the Greek team, there was a Libyan family of five, with three deaths, and two serious injuries.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of both the Libyan and Greek victims, who lost their lives,”
The Greek team arrived in the city of Benghazi, with the accident occurring in the city of Marawah.
On Saturday, the President of Greece, Katerina Sakellaropoulouv and Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis reached out to the Head of Libya’s Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Mnifi, offering profound condolences in light of the recent natural disaster in eastern Libya.
In their messages, both leaders voiced their profound sympathy and solidarity with the Libyan people, underlining the deep bond between the two nations. They emphasized Greece’s “unwavering commitment to stand by Libya, both in spirit and with tangible aid, to help mitigate the aftermath of the tragic storm.”
With hope and assurance, they wished for a rapid location of those still missing, swift recovery for the injured, and effective measures to address the infrastructural damages. They expressed confidence that the Libyan community, renowned for its resilience, will overcome this challenge and emerge even more robust.
They firmly believed that the “resilient spirit of the Libyan people would rise above this calamity, emerging even stronger.”
Cities in the eastern region, especially Derna, are in a state of panic, exacerbating the living and humanitarian conditions in the country. This situation has worsened due to the onslaught of Hurricane Daniel, which caused a large number of deaths, injuries, displacements, and thousands missing.
