Abu Bakr Al-Ghawi, the Minister of Housing and Reconstruction for Libya’s Government of National Unity (GNU), met with United Nations representatives to discuss strategies for managing the crisis of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and addressing the impact of wars in Libya.

During the Sunday meeting, they examined the process of evaluating buildings damaged by conflict and the operations of the Central Compensation Committee. This includes the involvement of ministry-affiliated agencies in appointing engineering offices for damage assessments.

Al-Ghawi urged UN representatives to share insights from successful reconstruction projects in war-impacted countries to inform Libya’s rebuilding efforts.

Key topics included the distribution of compensations for damages dating back to the 2011 conflict and securing necessary funding to continue support for affected Libyan citizens.

This meeting underscores the Government of National Unity’s dedication to tackling reconstruction and compensation challenges stemming from prolonged conflicts.

The collaboration aims to enhance the exchange of expertise with the United Nations, aiming for significant advancements in displacement and compensation issues, amidst ongoing concerns over Libya’s security situation, delayed elections, and the broader political transition since the 2011 overthrow of Moammar Gaddafi.
