Abdelmonem Al-Arfi, a member of the Libyan House of Representatives, has called on the UN Security Council to sanction Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbaiba, accusing him of obstructing the country’s electoral process.

Al-Arfi’s call was made in a press statement following a meeting between members of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State (HCS), which focused on the formation of a new government and the implementation of electoral laws.

He also highlighted that a planned meeting between Libyan MPs and HCS members in Tunisia was unexpectedly cancelled, with Al-Arfi hinting at possible external influences aiming to disrupt the meeting. Nevertheless, efforts to reschedule the gathering continue.

Al-Arfi criticized Dbaiba for allegedly using militias to secure his hold on power, accusing him of manipulating these groups to extend his tenure.

Libya has faced ongoing political instability and conflict since the 2011 ousting of Moammar Gaddafi, with a ceasefire in place yet security concerns persist due to intermittent clashes, and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The country faces the challenge of military unification and the withdrawal of foreign forces.

Elections initially set for December 2021 were postponed because of disputes over the electoral framework and candidate eligibility, raising questions about Libya’s path to a peaceful political transition.
