The Libyan Foreign Ministry, under Foreign Minister Abdelhadi Al-Hwaij, recently engaged in discussions to improve the operations of United Nations organizations within Libya. The talks involved the Director of the International Organizations Department, the Minister’s Advisor for International Organizations Affairs, and representatives from UN agencies operating in the country. The objective is to enhance collaboration between the Libyan government and international entities involved in humanitarian, development, and relief work.

Minister Al-Hwaij stressed the importance of complying with the Prime Minister’s directives to improve communication channels with these organizations. The discussions focused on understanding the challenges in humanitarian and developmental efforts and the importance of including local partners to ensure assistance meets the specific needs and regulations of the Libyan context, while also maintaining transparency.

These efforts demonstrate Libya’s commitment to building effective partnerships with the UN and its agencies, aiming to support the nation’s stability and development.

Additionally, Minister Al-Hwaij has advocated for reforming the UN structure, particularly suggesting a transfer of powers from the UN Security Council to the General Assembly to achieve more equitable global representation. This proposal was part of discussions on the need for United Nations reform, emphasizing respect for all nations, human rights, and the will of the people, reflecting Libya’s aspirations for progress, democracy, and development.

The UN Security Council has reiterated its support for a Libyan-led political process aimed at facilitating “free, fair, transparent, and inclusive” elections, endorsing the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). The Council called for international support for Bathily and UNSMIL, emphasizing the significance of an inclusive political process and the goal of holding nationwide elections.
