On Wednesday, the Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA) Fayez
Al-Sarraj discussed the latest developments in Libya with the Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres.

In a phone call, Guterres expressed his annoyance at reports of mines planted in residential areas on the outskirts of Tripoli.

He also spoke of his extreme shock at the reported discovery of a number of mass graves in the city of Tarhuna, calling for a comprehensive and transparent investigation to uncover the perpetrators.

The Secretary-General also expressed his welcome of the decision by the UN Human Rights Council to establish an international fact finding mission in Libya.

He stressed his keenness to expedite the appointment of a new special envoy to Libya and resume the political process.

Al-Sarraj indicated that the forces aligned with the GNA will continue to perform their duties and defend Libya’s sovereignty.

“We will not allow terrorist mercenary groups to control oil resources, control the wealth of Libyans. The reopening of oil facilities is an unquestionable goal” Al-Sarraj stated.

He also confirmed that he has called for political dialogue in order to find a comprehensive solution.

Al-Sarraj expressed his belief that the only solution to the crisis would be Libyan-led and needs to end the fragile transitional stages through general elections and a permanent constitution for the country.

Al-Sarraj stressed that the mistakes of the past must not be repeated.
