Floodwaters have ravaged the city of Gharyan, Libya, resulting in the tragic death of a citizen who attempted to rescue two children caught in the torrents.
Osama Ali, spokesperson for the Emergency and Ambulance Services, reported the man, whose name has not been released, was swept away by the floodwaters while trying to save the children trapped in a stream within a valley.
This unfortunate event occurred shortly after the Emergency and Ambulance Services had elevated their readiness across the Gharyan municipality due to increased flood risks. On Wednesday, the agency issued warnings to residents, advising them to remain vigilant, avoid valley streams, and practice caution in response to the unpredictable weather conditions.
To manage the flooding, emergency teams from the General Company for Water and Sanitation were deployed. These teams engaged in extensive operations to remove rainwater that had accumulated in various parts of the city, particularly focusing on areas prone to waterlogging. Their activities included pumping out water from flooded areas and clearing drainage systems to ensure continuous flow, especially near critical infrastructure like the “Al-Nahda” clinic.
Gharyan, like many parts of Libya, has been grappling with infrastructure challenges exacerbated by years of political instability and conflict. The city’s drainage and flood management systems are often insufficient for dealing with sudden and heavy rainfall, leading to frequent and severe flooding. Such conditions not only pose immediate risks to life and property but also highlight the broader issue of inadequate urban planning and maintenance in regions recovering from conflict.
