The Delegation of the European Union to Libya, in collaboration with the diplomatic missions of the European Union Member States in Libya, has issued a statement expressing deep concern over the reported abduction of Ibrahim Al Drissi, an elected member of the House of Representatives.

The statement emphasises the urgency for competent authorities to swiftly investigate the circumstances surrounding Al Drissi’s disappearance and to ensure his immediate release.

“We condemn all forms of arbitrary detention throughout Libya, including those perpetrated on political grounds. The rule of law and justice must prevail and a thorough and transparent investigation of all past and current disappearances is necessary and urgent. Those responsible need to be held to account based on the law,” the statement declares.

The European Union joins the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in reminding Libyan authorities of their obligation to respect fundamental freedoms and uphold human rights and the rule of law.

This strong stance from the European Union highlights the international community’s ongoing concerns about arbitrary detentions and the importance of upholding justice and human rights in Libya.

Ibrahim Al-Drissi, a prominent member of the Libyan House of Representatives, was recently reported kidnapped, sparking significant concern and prompting swift action from the highest levels of Libya’s security apparatus. This incident underscores the ongoing instability and security challenges in Libya, a country that has been mired in conflict since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

The kidnapping of a high-profile political figure like Al-Drissi highlights the volatile security situation and the risks faced by public officials in Libya. This incident has raised alarm not only within the Libyan government but also among international observers closely monitoring the situation.

The kidnapping incident could have broader implications for Libya’s political stability and security situation. It highlights the ongoing risks and challenges in securing the country and protecting its political figures. The response by Haftar and the security apparatus will be closely watched as a measure of their capability to handle such crises.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has also expressed its deep concern regarding the kidnapping of Ibrahim Al Drissi, an elected member of the House of Representatives for Benghazi. The mission has called on the relevant authorities to locate and secure his immediate release, urging a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and holding those responsible accountable under the law.

UNSMIL strongly condemned all forms of arbitrary detention across Libya. Such actions undermine the rule of law and create a climate of fear.
