On Friday, the Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio reaffirmed that “a new special envoy of the UN Secretary-General in Libya must be appointed, as it has been a long vacant position.”

In a press conference held at the headquarters of the Italian Foreign Ministry “to support the political process in Libya”, Di Maio said that in his recent meeting in Tripoli with the Head of the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, he called for moderation.

Regarding the IRINI operation to monitor the arms embargo on Libya, Di Maio said that “after the approval by Parliament of the mission’s decree, Italy will now be able to provide its assets, which include a frigate and two planes.”

“For the sake of the mission’s effectiveness, it is important to ensure widespread coverage, which must be by sea, air and satellite, to monitor all parts of Libya, and as soon as possible”, the Italian minister said.
