Spain & US Reaffirm Commitment to Libyan Stability

The Spanish Ambassador to Libya, Javier Soria, met with the U.S. Special Envoy for Libya, Ambassador Richard Norland, and Jeremy Berndt, the U.S. Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires.

According to the Spanish Embassy, the primary focus of the meeting was to exchange views on the current situation in Libya and reaffirm their joint commitment to peace and stability in the country. This dialogue underscores the collaborative efforts of Spain and the United States in supporting Libya’s political process, which is facilitated by the United Nations.

During the meeting, the diplomats discussed various aspects of the Libyan crisis, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in fostering a secure and stable environment. They emphasized the need for a unified approach to address the ongoing political and security challenges in Libya.

Ambassador Norland reiterated the U.S. commitment to working with international partners to support a comprehensive political solution in Libya. He stressed the importance of holding inclusive elections and promoting reconciliation among Libyan factions. Norland also pointed out that sustained international support is crucial for the success of Libya’s political transition.

Ambassador Soria echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Spain’s dedication to peace and stability in Libya. He highlighted the role of the European Union in providing support to Libya and stressed the importance of coordinated efforts among international actors to ensure a positive outcome for the Libyan people.

Jeremy Berndt, the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, expressed optimism about the ongoing diplomatic efforts and highlighted the need for continued engagement and dialogue. He pointed out that the collaborative efforts of Spain, the U.S., and other international partners are vital for addressing Libya’s challenges.

The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to enhance cooperation and support for Libya’s UN-led political process.

Notably, the newly appointed Spanish Ambassador to Libya, Javier Soria, presented his credentials to the acting Foreign Minister of the Government of National Unity, Taher Baour, in Tripoli.

Minister Baour welcomed Ambassador Soria, wishing him success in his new role. He assured the ambassador of the ministry’s readiness to provide all necessary assistance. Baour emphasized the strong ties between Libya and Spain and the importance of enhancing cooperation and partnership to serve the mutual interests of both nations.

The meeting highlighted the deep-rooted relations between the two countries and their commitment to fostering collaboration across various sectors. This step marks a significant move towards strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between Libya and Spain.
