On Monday, the newly appointed Turkish Ambassador to Libya, Guven Begec, presented his credentials to the Acting Foreign Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Taher Al-Baour This ceremony marked a significant step in reinforcing the diplomatic ties between Turkey and Libya.
In a statement released by the foreign ministry, Al-Baour warmly welcomed Ambassador Begec, wishing him success in his new role. He expressed the ministry’s readiness to provide all necessary support to ensure the ambassador’s mission is successful.
Al-Baour also highlighted the deep historical connections between the two nations, emphasizing the importance of enhancing cooperation and partnership to serve their mutual interests.
Turkey and Libya share a rich history of diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations, which have become particularly significant since the 2011 Libyan revolution. During the conflict, Turkey played a crucial role in supporting the former Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) against rival factions, primarily through military aid and strategic support. This involvement has continued to shape the political and security landscape in Libya.
The arrival of Ambassador Begec comes at a critical juncture as Libya strives for political stabilization and prepares for democratic elections. Just a day before Begec’s arrival, Taher Al-Baour met with U.S. Special Envoy to Libya, Ambassador Richard Norland. Their discussions focused on supporting both local and international efforts to conduct fair elections and bring an end to the transitional period that has long characterized Libya’s political landscape.
The meeting addressed recent political developments, economic issues, and the support for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in overcoming political deadlock and advancing the country towards elections.
Ambassador Norland emphasized the importance of revitalizing the UN-led political process, stating, “We discussed the significance of reinvigorating the UN-led political initiative and our mutual commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation on issues impacting Libya and the region.”
