Italian Defense Minister Says Permanent Ceasefire is Needed in Libya

On Tuesday, Italian Defense Minister Lorenzo Guerini reiterated his desire to reach a permanent ceasefire in Libya.

This is in order to provide a new impetus for political dialogue between the warring parties, as agreed upon in the Berlin Conference.

These remarks came during a meeting between Guerini and his Turkish counterpart, Hulusi Akar, to discuss the situation in Libya and bilateral cooperation.

The Italian Minister of Defense explained that they had agreed on the necessity of finding a political solution and achieving peace in Libya.

The two sides stressed the importance of working together to stabilize the Mediterranean.

Akar stated that they exchanged information on bilateral relations and regional issues, particularly Libya and Syria.

They also evaluated recent developments in the eastern Mediterranean.

“We believe that the efficient cooperation between Turkey and Italy in all fields, especially in defense and security, will benefit not only our countries but also the entire region”, Akar said at a joint press conference with Guerini.

The meeting came after Akar and Turkish Chief of General Staff Yasar Guler paid an official visit to Libya last week.

In November, Turkey and Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA), signed MoU’s on military cooperation as well as maritime boundaries in the Mediterranean Sea.

Turkey has also sent military officials to Libya and built up its military presence in the Mediterranean.
