Major General Ahmed Al-Mismari, the spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), has stated that the army has no intentions of advancing towards any internal targets within Libya.
In an interview with Russia’s “Sputnik,” Al-Mismari clarified that the recent military movements towards the southwest are part of a strategic plan to strengthen the presence of the armed forces at their existing bases. This move aims to prevent illegal activities across the borders, especially given the current tensions in neighbouring countries.
Al-Mismari explained that the developments in neighbouring countries, particularly in Mali and Niger, necessitated the dispatch of reinforcements to military zones where the LNA is stationed, with the objective of securing Libya’s borders.
He firmly denied reports circulating on some media outlets, which claimed that the army was planning to advance towards the Ghadames region and take control of border crossings with Algeria.
Notably, the European Union (EU) mission to Libya has expressed deep concern over recent military mobilisations, particularly in the southwestern region of Libya.
In a statement issued by the EU delegation alongside the diplomatic missions of EU member states in Libya, the EU warned that the use of force could destabilise the country and lead to humanitarian suffering, urging all parties to avoid such outcomes at all costs.
The EU called on all factions to engage in dialogue to prevent further divisions, maintain the 2020 ceasefire agreement, and prioritise the interests of the Libyan people. The statement also urged Libyan actors and armed groups to exercise restraint and urgently de-escalate tensions.
Furthermore, the EU reaffirmed its support for the United Nations’ efforts towards a Libyan-led, inclusive political process.
