The Libyan sports community has been struck by the sudden passing of international futsal referee Mohammed Al-Affas, who died unexpectedly on Friday due to a cardiac arrest. His death has left the futsal community in shock and sadness, as tributes pour in from across the country.

Al-Affas, a highly respected referee from Benghazi, was well-known for his contributions to Libyan futsal, officiating both locally and internationally. His sudden death has prompted condolences from numerous football clubs, sports organizations, and colleagues, all of whom recognized his significant impact on the sport.

Libya’s top football clubs, including Al-Hilal and Al-Ahly Benghazi, were quick to offer their heartfelt condolences to Al-Afass’s family, acknowledging his important role in promoting and developing futsal in the country. Both clubs praised his dedication, professionalism, and the respect he earned throughout his career.

In addition, Libyan Airlines, where Al-Affas worked, issued a statement mourning the loss of their colleague, describing him as a dedicated worker and an admired figure both within the company and the sports world.

The Libyan Referees Association in Benghazi also paid tribute to Al-Affas, describing him as “a symbol of sportsmanship and dedication.” They praised his contributions to the growth of futsal in Libya and expressed their deep sorrow over his untimely passing, extending condolences to his family and friends.

Al-Afass has been on the international futsal referees list since 2018, officiating in several high-profile matches on both continental and global levels. His expertise and commitment to the sport earned him widespread respect, and in early 2024, FIFA officially recognized him as one of four Libyan international futsal referees.

In addition to his work in major tournaments, Al-Affas was actively involved in youth futsal, mentoring young players and referees. His dedication to developing the sport at all levels made him a beloved figure in the community.
