Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela emphasised the crucial role of Libya in addressing the ongoing migration challenges across the Mediterranean.
At the recent MED9 summit in Cyprus, Abela stressed that Libya must be an integral partner in the European Union’s efforts to manage migration from North Africa, highlighting the importance of closer cooperation between the EU and Libyan authorities.
Abela expressed Malta’s continued support for the European Commission’s initiatives aimed at strengthening relations with Libya to ensure effective management of migration routes.
He noted that without addressing the challenges posed by migration through the Mediterranean, any solution to Europe’s broader migration crisis would be incomplete.
The Maltese Prime Minister underlined that migration is not just a European issue but one deeply rooted in the dynamics of the Mediterranean, which affects both the EU and North African countries. He also welcomed the appointment of an EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean, which he believes underscores EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s understanding of the region’s specific realities.
In addition to the migration issue, Abela reiterated Malta’s commitment to promoting diplomacy and humanitarian aid in the region. He called for more robust action, rather than mere words, in addressing the war in Gaza and Lebanon, echoing Malta’s stance for an immediate ceasefire in both regions.
Abela concluded his speech by stressing the strategic importance of Jordan in maintaining regional stability, commending the country’s efforts in providing refuge to those fleeing conflict. He reaffirmed Malta’s and the EU’s strong support for Jordan as a key partner in the Middle East.
