On Sunday, Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, held a meeting with his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Safadi, in Amman to discuss a number of regional issues, notably the ongoing conflict in Libya.

In a statement, Shoukry confirmed the need for a Libyan-led solution that would lead to an end to the crisis in the country. He said events in Libya constitute a serious threat to not only Egyptian, but Arab national security. He stressed that Egypt was seriously watching the situation in Libya, and taking the necessary steps to to protect itself. The Egyptian FM warned against foreign intervention in Libya, and the act of bringing foreign extremists to the war-torn country.

Shoukry also hailed the bilateral relations between Egypt and Jordan, highlighting Egypt’s willingness to discover more fields of cooperation, to meet the aspiration of the two peoples.

On his part, Safadi said, “We are all concerned over the deteriorating Libyan situation” expressing his support to all efforts aimed at reaching a political solution that “preserves the unity and cohesion of Libya, and prevents it from becoming a place for regional conflicts”. Adding that, “We support all UN resolutions related to reaching a political settlement made by the Libyans, in accordance with the outputs of the Berlin Conference, and the Cairo Declaration in order to preserve Libya’s security and stability”.

Libya has been marred in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising in 2011, led to the overthrow of longtime ruler, Muammar Gaddafi.
