On Thursday, the Libyan National Council for Women convened an important meeting at the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) to discuss strategies for empowering women and enhancing their role in the upcoming electoral process.

The meeting brought together prominent figures, including Naima Dalf, Member of Parliament; Dr. Houria Al-Tarmal, Minister of State for Women’s Affairs; Fathia Al-Bakhbakhy, President of the Libyan Women’s Union; Sheikh Senousi Al-Barassi, Head of the Supreme Council of Libyan Elders; and Dr. Fawzia Al-Sharif, Head of the National Council for Women.

Representing HNEC, Magda Al-Kateb, Head of the Disability Support Unit, welcomed participants and emphasized the importance of women’s participation in shaping a democratic society. She stressed that women should actively engage in elections, both as candidates and voters, while highlighting the need to ensure full inclusion of women with disabilities in the political process.

The meeting included political activists, civil society representatives, and experts, who presented various proposals to enhance women’s participation in elections, particularly in underserved regions. Suggestions included tailored training programs and awareness campaigns aimed at equipping women with the skills to engage effectively in the electoral process.

Attendees also discussed the challenges facing women in politics, including cultural and legal barriers, and proposed reforms to increase female representation in elected bodies. Emphasis was placed on the need for legal and structural changes to promote gender parity in Libya’s political institutions.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to continued collaboration between the Libyan Women’s Council and HNEC.

A joint action plan will focus on increasing women’s participation in elections through capacity-building initiatives and addressing systemic challenges. Participants reaffirmed their dedication to ensuring equal opportunities for women in Libya’s political future, promoting inclusivity and gender equality across the nation.
