Libya’s Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, reviewed the progress of a major environmental project in Ajdabiya that aims to plant 30 million tree saplings. The initiative is part of a broader plan to create a greenbelt around the city, designed to combat desertification and enhance the region’s ecological sustainability.

The update came during Haftar’s meeting on Saturday with Jibril Al-Badri, Head of the National Development Authority, who presented the latest developments in a number of national projects, including the Ajdabiya afforestation plan.

According to a statement from the General Command, Al-Badri confirmed that the work is progressing in line with the approved schedule and technical standards. He affirmed the Authority’s commitment to ensuring all projects meet environmental and engineering specifications.

Field Marshal Haftar emphasized the importance of accelerating the implementation of strategic development initiatives. He called for strict adherence to quality benchmarks and technical requirements across all phases of execution, especially for projects that directly impact the region’s environment and long-term sustainability.

The greenbelt project around Ajdabiya is among Libya’s most ambitious environmental programs, aiming to transform arid areas through reforestation and environmental restoration, while offering long-term benefits for agriculture, climate resilience, and community health.
