Benghazi is witnessing a major transformation in its electricity infrastructure as large-scale projects move into advanced stages of completion. These initiatives are part of Libya’s national efforts to boost grid efficiency, improve network stability, and meet rising energy demand across the city.
The projects are being fully supported by the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund, chaired by Engineer Belqasim Khalifa Haftar, with direct oversight from the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energies, Dr. Awad Al-Badri. Field supervision is carried out by the Benghazi Plain Projects Administration to ensure timely delivery.
Strategic upgrades to the grid
These strategic electricity projects aim to resolve bottlenecks at medium-voltage and injection stations while enhancing loop connections between substations. The improvements are designed to absorb increased consumption and provide a more reliable power supply for residents and industries in Benghazi.
Project One: Juliana–Ouzo–Al-Keesh connection
The first project links the Juliana 30 kV station to the Ouzo 30 kV station, and then to the Al-Keesh 220/30 kV station through 30 kV cables with two circuits. Phase one, covering 1.5 km from Ouzo to Juliana, has been fully completed. Phase two, stretching from Al-Keesh to Ouzo, has reached around 50% completion.
Project Two: Al-Nahr–Central Benghazi–Al-Keesh connection
The second project connects the Al-Nahr 30 kV station with the Central Benghazi 30 kV station and onwards to the Al-Keesh 220/30 kV station. Using 30 kV cables with a single circuit, phase one from Al-Nahr to Central Benghazi (1.2 km) is complete, while phase two from Central Benghazi to Al-Keesh is nearly finished at 90% completion.
Supporting infrastructure
In parallel, a 12-pipe duct crossing at Al-Keesh Post Junction is being constructed to serve both projects. This includes two circuits for the Al-Keesh–Ouzo project and one circuit for the Al-Keesh–Central Benghazi line.
Long-term vision
These massive electricity infrastructure projects highlight Libya’s commitment to modernizing Benghazi’s power network. The upgrades are aligned with the city’s urban growth and industrial expansion plans, ensuring long-term stability for the national grid and improved quality of life for citizens.
