Libya’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, Dr. Othman Al-Huma, held a high-level meeting on Monday with Mohamed Al-Sayeh Al-Akshi, Director of the General Company for Water and Wastewater, to discuss urgent infrastructure challenges in southern Libya.
The meeting took place at the Office of the Prime Minister in the southern region, in the presence of Dr. Ismail Al-Sharif, Chairman of the Technical Advisory Committee, and Dr. Ali Al-Sanousi, Chief of the Cabinet.
Discussions focused on the current state of water and wastewater infrastructure across southern cities and the key obstacles facing the utility company. These include the shortage of essential equipment, persistent technical malfunctions, and the need to enhance the quality of services delivered to residents.
Dr. Huma emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the General Company for Water and Wastewater in overcoming operational barriers. He highlighted the strategic importance of water and sanitation services, noting that this sector is a top priority for the government due to its direct impact on the daily lives of citizens.
He also stressed the urgency of identifying areas in need of new water wells and determining the full range of resources required to execute such projects.
For his part, Al-Akshi presented a list of the most pressing needs necessary to improve service delivery and ensure stable access to clean water and effective wastewater management in the region.
The meeting reflects a broader effort by Libyan authorities to address chronic infrastructure issues in the south, which has long suffered from neglect, underinvestment, and deteriorating public services.
