The Chairman of Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC), Emad Al-Sayeh, received British Ambassador Martin Reynolds and his accompanying delegation on Wednesday in Tripoli. The visit marks the ambassador’s first official meeting with the commission since assuming his duties as the United Kingdom’s envoy to Libya.

According to a statement by the HNEC, discussions focused on the latest developments in the ongoing municipal elections, part of the third group of the 2025 electoral process. The meeting reviewed the commission’s preparations for implementing the remaining phases of the elections in accordance with the highest standards of transparency, integrity, and professionalism.

The two sides also discussed international support for Libya’s democratic path, particularly the role of the United Kingdom in strengthening electoral governance, providing technical expertise, and enhancing public trust in the voting process.

Ambassador Reynolds commended the commission’s efforts in managing and organising electoral events under challenging circumstances. He reaffirmed Britain’s full support for HNEC’s mission, describing credible elections as “a cornerstone for achieving lasting stability and legitimate governance in Libya.”

For his part, Chairman Al-Sayeh expressed appreciation for the UK’s continued interest in supporting Libya’s electoral institutions. He emphasised the importance of coordination with international partners to ensure successful and inclusive elections that reflect the will of the Libyan people.

The visit underscores the growing engagement of the international community with Libya’s election authorities as preparations continue for municipal and potential national elections, widely seen as a vital step toward consolidating stability and ending political division.
