The Director of Greater Benghazi Security, Major General Salah Houidi, announced on Saturday the official launch of the new General Investigations and Arrest Department. The move follows directives from the Interior Minister of the Libyan government and comes with full support from the General Command.
The department began operations after completing the preparation of its headquarters, training its personnel, and equipping patrols with the required vehicles and gear to ensure rapid response and effective performance.
Its duties include enforcing arrest warrants, implementing court-issued verdicts in absentia, tracking and apprehending wanted suspects, raiding criminal hideouts, shutting down illegal alcohol production sites, and combating drug trafficking. The unit will also provide operational support to police stations across Benghazi.
Authorities say the new department strengthens Benghazi’s security capabilities, enhances law enforcement, and contributes to protecting the community while ensuring respect for citizens’ rights. The initiative forms part of wider efforts to improve safety and stability in the city.
