Libya’s Ministry of Oil and Gas held a high-level meeting with a visiting delegation from Algeria’s state-owned energy company Sonatrach to strengthen bilateral cooperation across the oil and gas sector. The talks brought together senior technical and administrative officials from both sides, highlighting a shared commitment to advancing joint projects, exchange of expertise, and expanding operational partnerships.
The Sonatrach delegation included Sheherazade Ben Ammara, Director of Reservoirs, M. Merzoug Belkahla, Director of Logistics, Imad Boudis, Director of Geology, and Mohamed Gherab, Director of Laboratories, along with a representative of the Algerian Embassy in Libya. From the Libyan side, the meeting involved Fathi Al-Hakimi, Director General of the Planning Department, Majid Al-Sheikh, Director of Economic Research, engineer Mustafa Bin Issa, Technical Affairs Advisor, and Najia Al-Ruqaybi from the Planning Department.
Discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in oilfield laboratories, advancing joint technical studies, and following up on the recently signed agreement between the Libyan Petroleum Research Centre and Algeria’s specialised laboratories. Officials also explored partnership opportunities in refinery maintenance, pipeline projects, solar energy initiatives, and capacity-building programmes aimed at preparing national professionals for international energy institutions.
The meeting also reviewed Sonatrach’s ongoing activities in the Ghadames Basin, where the company has resumed technical operations following improved security conditions. Both sides underlined the importance of facilitating field visits, strengthening institutional coordination, and creating mechanisms to accelerate cooperation in exploration, infrastructure development, and energy transition technologies.
Libya and Algeria affirmed their shared vision for deeper integration in the energy sector, noting that expanded collaboration would support regional stability and contribute to more sustainable growth. The Ministry of Oil and Gas emphasised that such partnerships reflect Libya’s broader strategy to modernise the sector, attract expertise, and develop its national workforce.
