Libyan MP: Reinstatement of Bashagha Will Not End Tripoli Demonstrations

Member of Parliament, Ali Al-Takbali, said that the return of the Interior Minister of the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA), Fathi Bashagha, after his suspension, will not affect the demonstrations taking place in Tripoli.

In press statements on Thursday, Al-Takbali confirmed that he had expected from the beginning that Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj could not do anything to Bashagha. He pointed out that both of them needed each other, and that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was the point of consultation and “Godfather” for both of them.

Al-Takbali considered this “the return of water to its stream.” He pointed out that the demonstrations will continue, and both of them cannot deny this, despite trying to deviate it from its course.

The Libyan MP said that Bashagha supported the demonstrations to bring down Al-Sarraj in order to replace him as prime minister. Bashagha wanted to prove to the world that he was liked, in complete contrast to his true image in the Libyan streets.” Regarding the Tripoli militias that celebrated Bashagha’s suspension, Al-Takbali noted that they would have to accept the decision and swallow their pride.

On August 28, the GNA’s Presidential Council suspended Bashagha from his duties. It ordered an investigation over his handling of demonstrations and failure to protect protesters from a violent crackdown. On Thursday, PM Al-Sarraj decided to reinstate Bashagha after being suspended for six days.
