107 Migrants Arrive on the Coast of Lampedusa from Libya

A group of migrants landed on the coast of Lampedusa, in the Sicilian town of Agrigento, coming from the Libyan coast, AKI news agency reported on Friday citing security sources.

“A boat carrying 107 migrants was intercepted off the island’s coast by a patrol of the port protection forces and members of the financial police,” the sources said.

“Immigrants of different nationalities, who left from the Libyan coast, were transferred to the first aid and reception centre Contrada Imbriacola, which currently hosts 1,239 people,” the sources added.

Last July, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Libya announced that nearly 6,000 migrants who tried to flee Libya were intercepted or rescued and returned so far during 2020. IOM urged a European action to end returns to Libya, where most of migrants end up in detention, while some are unaccounted for.
