Libya has stepped up efforts to lift the air ban imposed on its aviation sector following technical talks between officials from the Civil Aviation Authority and a delegation from the European Union Mission to Libya. The discussions focused on accelerating outstanding technical and procedural requirements with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport.
According to a statement from the Civil Aviation Authority, the meeting was held as part of follow-up actions to implement outcomes and recommendations from earlier talks between Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbaiba and the Head of the EU Mission. The objective is to address remaining obstacles preventing the resumption of Libyan flights to European airspace.
During the meeting, the EU delegation pledged to provide urgent technical support to Libya. This includes assigning a specialised aviation safety expert to work directly at the headquarters of the Civil Aviation Authority. The expert will assist in reviewing compliance data and ensuring that technical requirements requested by the European Commission are fully met.
The EU Mission also committed to contributing to development and modernisation programmes within Libya’s civil aviation sector. These measures aim to help Libyan authorities achieve full compliance with international aviation safety and security standards, a key condition for lifting the long-standing flight ban.
EU officials expressed their appreciation for the technical level reached by Libya’s digital transformation systems within the civil aviation sector. They noted that these systems play an important role in strengthening oversight capabilities and improving safety and security standards across airports and air navigation services.
For his part, the Head of the Civil Aviation Authority welcomed the positive stance of the European Union and its continued support for efforts to lift the air ban as soon as possible. He also praised the role of Libya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in facilitating communication and coordination with European institutions.
The lifting of the air ban remains a strategic priority for Libya, as it would support economic recovery, restore international connectivity, and enhance confidence in the country’s aviation sector after years of restrictions.
