A tragic road accident near the Libyan border claimed the lives of seven Egyptian nationals and left six others injured after a violent collision between two vehicles on the Sallum International Road, authorities said on Sunday.

The crash occurred in the Al-Mathani area, west of Marsa Matrouh, close to Egypt’s western frontier with Libya. The impact caused the vehicles to catch fire, resulting in the bodies of seven victims being completely burned. Preliminary information confirmed that all those killed and injured were workers from Egypt’s Qena Governorate.

Emergency services dispatched six ambulances to the scene to evacuate the injured to Al-Najila Hospital, where they are receiving urgent medical care. The bodies of the deceased were transferred to the morgue pending official procedures and identification.

Medical sources said the injured suffered varying degrees of trauma, including suspected fractures, cerebral hemorrhaging, bruises, and abrasions. Doctors described the condition of several patients as serious, with intensive monitoring underway.

Egypt’s Minister of Social Solidarity Maya Morsy announced that she is closely following the developments of the incident. She instructed immediate coordination with the Social Solidarity Directorate in Matrouh Governorate, alongside relief teams from the Egyptian Red Crescent, to provide emergency assistance and humanitarian support.

The ministry confirmed that all necessary financial aid and relief measures will be disbursed to the families of those killed and injured, as part of the state’s response to the tragedy.

The accident once again highlights the dangers faced by migrant and domestic workers traveling along long-distance desert routes, particularly near border areas, where traffic accidents continue to claim lives.
