Public concern is rising across Libya following the reported abduction of political activist Mehdi Abdulati in the coastal city of Misrata, in a case that has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed fears over civil liberties.

The Libyan National Gathering Party issued a strong statement denouncing the incident, describing it as a “cowardly criminal act” and part of an ongoing pattern aimed at silencing dissenting voices. The party called on the Attorney General’s Office to urgently investigate the case, identify those responsible, and disclose the full circumstances surrounding the disappearance.

According to the statement, contact with Abdulati was lost under unclear conditions, raising serious concerns about his safety. The party held the abductors fully responsible for his physical and psychological wellbeing, demanding his immediate release.

The incident has reignited debate over the protection of political activists in Libya, particularly those known for criticising corruption and advocating for transparency. Abdulati has been recognised for his outspoken positions on governance issues and his calls to safeguard Libya’s national wealth, which observers say may have made him a target.

The party stressed that targeting peaceful activism through abduction, violence or intimidation constitutes a clear violation of both domestic and international law. It warned that failure to act decisively risks deepening instability and undermining the rule of law.

Calls have also been directed at security authorities in Misrata and across the country to intensify efforts to locate Abdulati and bring those responsible to justice. Analysts say the case highlights ongoing challenges facing Libya’s security environment, where political divisions and the presence of armed groups continue to impact civil freedoms.

The abduction has triggered reactions from civil society groups and activists, who are urging swift action and greater accountability to prevent further incidents and protect freedom of expression.
