Libyan authorities announced the arrest of 33 irregular migrants during a security operation carried out by the Operations Department of the Anti-Illegal Migration Agency office in Al-Abyar.
According to the agency, the migrants were found without legal identification documents or passports and admitted to entering Libya through irregular routes.
The operation formed part of a broader monitoring and security campaign targeting suburbs, towns and municipalities within the agency’s area of jurisdiction in eastern Libya.
Officials said the campaign focused on tracking irregular migration activities and identifying individuals residing in the country illegally.
All detainees were transferred to the Greater Benghazi Shelter Centre to complete legal procedures and further investigations.
Libya remains one of the main transit points for migrants attempting to reach Europe through the Mediterranean Sea, with security agencies continuing efforts to combat human trafficking and irregular migration networks operating across the country.
In recent months, Libyan authorities have intensified security campaigns targeting smuggling routes and migrant detention sites, particularly in eastern and southern regions.
The operations come amid growing international concern over migration flows from Libya towards southern Europe, especially during periods of favourable weather conditions in the Mediterranean.
Human rights organisations and international agencies have repeatedly called for stronger protections for migrants inside Libya, while Libyan authorities maintain that combating irregular migration remains a national security priority.
The Anti-Illegal Migration Agency said its operations would continue across areas under its control in coordination with other security bodies to address illegal migration activities and strengthen border monitoring efforts.
