Mitiga International Airport has welcomed the first group of Libyan pilgrims returning from Saudi Arabia, marking the start of the homebound phase of Libya’s 2026 Hajj operation.
The first return flight, operated by Al Buraq Air, landed at the airport on Friday evening carrying pilgrims who had successfully completed the annual pilgrimage. Airport officials, reception teams, and support staff were present to facilitate arrival procedures and ensure a smooth transition for travelers returning home after their spiritual journey.
According to officials, extensive preparations were made in advance to manage the return process efficiently. Reception committees were deployed at the airport to assist passengers, coordinate logistics, and provide support services aimed at ensuring comfort and convenience, particularly for elderly pilgrims and those requiring special assistance.
The operation includes scheduled arrivals through several airports across Libya, including Benghazi, Sirte, Misrata, Sabha, Al Abraq, and Tobruk. The return program has been coordinated by airport authorities in cooperation with Al Buraq Air to ensure the safe and orderly transportation of thousands of Libyan pilgrims.
Officials stated that all return flights are being conducted according to a carefully prepared timetable designed to maintain efficiency and minimize delays. The operation represents one of the largest annual logistical efforts undertaken by Libyan institutions, requiring close coordination among aviation authorities, airlines, health teams, and service providers.
The General Authority for Hajj and Umrah officially launched the return phase after the completion of Hajj rituals in Saudi Arabia. Additional flights are expected to arrive daily as pilgrims make their way back to different regions of Libya.
