The Libyan Olympic Committee is preparing to organise its largest open Olympic Day event on 4 July at Martyrs’ Square, with the participation of 30 sports federations for the first time.
The public sporting celebration aims to promote Olympic culture in Libya and encourage wider participation in sport among people of all ages. The event will be open to athletes, families, children, and members of the public, as part of a broader effort to make sport more accessible across society.
A source from the media office of the Libyan Olympic Committee told Alwasat that the upcoming edition is expected to witness unprecedented participation, with around 1,000 athletes representing different sports. Individuals who are not affiliated with official sports federations will also be able to take part in the activities.
The organising committee said the event has been designed to welcome men and women of all age groups, offering a wide range of sporting and recreational activities. The programme is part of the global Olympic Day celebrations organised annually by national Olympic committees around the world.
The event will include sporting demonstrations, community participation activities, and entertainment programmes for children. It will also feature awareness sessions aimed at strengthening Olympic values and introducing the public to the message of the Olympic movement.
Organisers said the programme will focus on promoting sportsmanship, fair play, tolerance, respect for competition, and cooperation among athletes. These values are central to the Olympic movement and reflect its wider role in building bridges between communities through sport.
The Libyan Olympic Committee hopes the event will encourage more people to practise sport and view physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. By opening the celebration to the public, the committee aims to expand the base of sports participation and create stronger links between athletes and the wider community.
Olympic Day is marked every year by national Olympic committees worldwide to highlight the role of sport in promoting health, unity, and positive social values. In Libya, this year’s celebration is expected to be one of the most inclusive Olympic events ever organised in the country.
