Libya’s Anti-Illegal Migration Agency announced the detention of 109 irregular migrants of various nationalities during a security operation carried out in Benghazi as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal migration and enforce the country’s immigration laws.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the agency’s Security Operations Department said the migrants were found to be in violation of Libya’s laws regulating entry into and residence in the country. The operation forms part of a broader campaign targeting individuals residing in Libya without legal documentation or valid residency status.

According to the agency, the operation was conducted within the framework of continuous security campaigns aimed at strengthening public security, combating irregular migration, and ensuring compliance with national immigration regulations. Officials said the latest operation reflects ongoing efforts to identify and apprehend migrants who entered Libya through unauthorized routes or remained in the country illegally.

Following their detention, legal procedures were initiated against all 109 migrants before they were transferred to the Benghazi Greater Shelter Center, where the remaining administrative and legal processes will be completed in accordance with Libyan law.

The Anti-Illegal Migration Agency said the campaign is one of a series of daily operations conducted in Benghazi to reinforce the rule of law and regulate the presence of foreign nationals. Authorities added that similar security operations will continue in coordination with the relevant agencies to address violations of immigration laws and strengthen migration management.

Libya remains one of the main transit countries for migrants seeking to reach Europe across the Mediterranean Sea. As a result, authorities have increased efforts to dismantle human smuggling networks, strengthen border security, and implement immigration regulations through detention, repatriation, and deportation operations.
