Speaker of Libya’s House of Representatives Ageela Saleh met representatives of the National Fezzan Forum in Benghazi on Sunday to discuss political and economic developments and ways to advance the country towards parliamentary and presidential elections.

The meeting brought together academics, activists and public figures representing the forum. Saleh heard their views and proposals on the situation in Fezzan and across Libya, as well as suggestions for resolving the country’s prolonged political crisis through a comprehensive political settlement.

The discussions focused on the need to organise parliamentary and presidential elections as soon as possible. Saleh said elections remained the key route towards ending Libya’s transitional period and establishing lasting political stability.

He also highlighted Fezzan’s historic and national role in the development of the modern Libyan state. Saleh praised academics, intellectuals, community leaders and members of the National Fezzan Forum for their participation in political dialogue and their efforts to contribute to national decision-making.

Saleh said advancing towards elections would help end the prolonged transitional phase and create conditions for stability, development and reconstruction across Libya, including the southern Fezzan region.

The meeting comes as Libya continues to face political division between rival institutions in the east and west, with efforts to establish a unified political framework and agree on a pathway towards nationwide elections remaining central to international and domestic discussions.

Members of the National Fezzan Forum reaffirmed their support for the House of Representatives as Libya’s elected legislative authority and expressed their willingness to maintain communication and coordination with its leadership.

They said continued dialogue could contribute to greater unity over national positions and strengthen political consensus.

The meeting underlined the importance of Fezzan’s role in Libya’s political process, particularly as calls for nationwide elections continue amid efforts to end the country’s prolonged transitional period and establish unified state institutions.
