On Thursday, the newly elected Speaker of the Arab Parliament, Adel Abdel-Rahman Al-Asoomi, affirmed the parliament’s full solidarity with the Libyan people. He welcomed the permanent ceasefire agreement of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC). This agreement was signed last Friday by the Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Libyan National Army (LNA).

His speech was held at the first plenary session of the Parliament’s third legislative term, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League in Cairo. Al-Asoomi reiterated the Parliament’s supportive position for all efforts towards a comprehensive political settlement in Libya, away from foreign interference.

The speaker also stressed the importance of supporting Arab states that have been subject to terrorist operations as well as joining efforts to eliminate all kinds of terrorism. He also announced his rejection of all foreign interventions, that seek to undermine the unity and stability of the Arab world.

He also stressed the need to reach a political solution in Syria, to end the current crisis there in a way that preserves the country’s unity and fulfils the aspirations of its people. He also stated that the parliament stands with Iraq and its people, in their legitimate demands for a free and dignified life.
