Libyan Foreign Minister Says GNA-Qatar Security Agreement Hinders Peace Agreement

On Thursday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Libyan Interim Government, Abdel-Hadi Al-Hwaij, denounced the security agreement signed by the Government of National Accord (GNA) and Qatar. He stated that this was an attempt to obstruct the political solution, and efforts to unify and re-build the country.

In press statements, Al-Hwaij said that international powers have become aware of the negative role played by Turkey and Qatar against Libya. Libyan forces including the Interim Government backed by the Libyan National Army are now pushing to end Turkish and Qatari influence in the country. As a result, the foreign minister claimed that Qatari and Turkish interference has gradually declined in Libya, as all parties have become convinced that it is in the national interest to end their influence.

“The Libyan National Army (LNA) has abided by all previous agreements and declared a ceasefire. The militias, aligned with the GNA, violated these agreements and prevented the moving to a new Libya,” he noted.

The FM claimed that the Libyan people are looking forward to achieving democracy, despite what he called “illegitimate forces working to prevent this, because they want the country to plunge into chaos, in order to achieve their ambitions.”

He also alleged that the GNA has spent billions of dollars during the conflict and brought mercenaries and weapons from abroad. Yet, it has “failed to spend a single dinar on reforming the state institutions,” he added.

Al-Hwaij denounced the power blackouts witnessed throughout Libya, while the country exports oil and gas to Europe. He stressed that Libya must be a haven of peace, and not a source of concern for its neighbours.
