A spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry, Dennis Kumetat, stated that Berlin supported the efforts of the United Nations to end the current crisis in Libya.
Kumetat was asked on his Twitter account, “Does Germany support a certain side in Libya?” He replied, “We recognize, like the international community as a whole, the UN-recognized government of Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj, but this does not mean that we support one party at the expense of the other in Libya. Through our policy, we want to contribute to creating framework conditions that enable the Libyan people to decide their own political, social, and economic destiny, independently and without influence from foreign powers.”
Kumetat called for the implementation of the ceasefire, which was signed in October. He confirmed Germany’s rejection of the presence of foreign fighters in the country, stressing Berlin’s categorical support for the efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
