On Thursday, Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Libyan Media Corporation (LMC). This comes as part of the two parties’ efforts to launch campaigns aimed at raising levels of political and electoral awareness among the Libyan people.

HNEC’s Head, Emad Al-Sayah, stressed the importance of this partnership in promoting awareness among people to actively participate in the upcoming elections, scheduled for December 2021.

Al-Sayah indicated that the newly signed agreement will allow the two to exchange expertise and develop media and awareness work inside the electoral commission. This would ensure access to information in its official framework, without distortion.

The Head of the LMC, Mohamed Baio, expressed his appreciation for the steps taken by the electoral commission to support communication with the media corporation. He noted that the agreement aims to develop national awareness to allow the Libyan people to exercise their basic right in electing those who represent them.

Following the 2011 uprising, Libya has been struggling in its democratic transition amid continuous armed conflict, political division, and economic instability.

A total of 75 Libyans representing the social and political spectrum across Libyan society participated in the UN-sponsored Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) that was held from 7-15 November in Tunis. They discussed a political roadmap to achieve a lasting peace in the war-torn country and agreed to hold general elections on 24 December 2021.
