On Wednesday, US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken stressed the need for the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement in Libya signed on 23 October 2020.

At a joint press conference in Berlin with his German counterpart, Heiko Maas, he demanded the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya.

“The ceasefire agreement signed on October 23 must be fully implemented, including the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Libya,” Blinken said.

“I will be engaging with our partners to further peace and stability through the Berlin II dialogue. Looking forward to a productive trip,” Blinken said before heading to Germany.

Earlier today, the US Embassy in Libya said Secretary Blinken will stress the importance of holding national elections on 24 December in accordance with the roadmap produced by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF).

In January 2020, the first Berlin International Conference on Libya took place, at the invitation of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. It gathered the leaders of 11 countries, as well as the UN. They agreed to unify the country’s institutions, stop foreign interference, and respect the arms embargo imposed on Libya, as well as implement the ceasefire agreement.
