On Wednesday, the Chairman of Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC), Emad El-Sayeh received the German Ambassador to Libya, Michael Unmacht in Tripoli.
HNEC said in a statement that the two parties discussed the latest developments in Libya’s political scene, and their repercussions on peace and stability.
Ambassador Unmacht affirmed the international community’s support for the Libyan people, and the national endeavours to hold elections.
He also expressed his government’s readiness to support Libya during this tumultuous stage, and achieve democracy.
Earlier this week, El-Sayeh met with the European Union’s Ambassador to Libya, José Antonio Sabadell in Tripoli.
The meeting discussed the latest developments in Libya’s electoral process. They reviewed ways to strengthen the proposed tracks, in accordance with the new political developments, both locally and internationally.
Sabadell stressed that international support for the democratic path in Libya remains strong. This is to achieve the aspirations of the Libyan people, towards a secure and stable democratic state.
On 10 February, the Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Ageela Saleh announced the unanimous appointment of Bashagha as the new Prime Minister. But Dbaiba warned that the appointment of a new interim government could lead to war and chaos in the country. He renewed his pledge to only hand power over to an elected government.
Libya has been mired in a political crisis since the fall of long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011. Observers fear that Libya will return to having two opposing governments, threatening the nation’s vital oil sector.
