On Wednesday, the Libyan Parliament-designated Prime Minister, Fathi Bashagha announced that he had discussed efforts to hold fair and transparent elections with senior US officials.
He added that his government seeks to “advance the economy, establish security, and achieve political stability.”
“Libya needs to cooperate with its international allies to move towards a better future,” Bashagha tweeted.
The Libyan Parliament appointed Bashagha in March, but rival Prime Minister, Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba has refused to cede power, creating two rival governments.
Last week, Dbaiba announced that his government would continue to perform its duties, describing handing over its duties to another government as a “waste of time.”
He added that the Parliament’s decision to replace his government was, “absurd, and a thing of the past.”
Parliament Speaker, Ageela Saleh has called on a number of state institutions to stop dealing with the “expired” Dbaiba government.
On Monday, Saleh received Bashagha, and a number of his cabinet ministers.
They discussed the latest developments in the ongoing political process. Bashagha briefed Saleh on the steps taken by his government, since obtaining the confidence of the Parliament.
He stressed his government’s keenness to carry out the tasks entrusted to it, and live up to the aspirations of the Libyan people.
The Premier said that his government will prepare a viable budget proposal “in line with the needs of the people. This budget’s plans and programs are aimed at advancing the Libyan economy, and securing a better future for the next generation.”
