Tunisia Hosts Aviation Safety Course for Libyan Officials

On Sunday, members of the Libyan Airports Authority participated in a training program hosted by the Tunisia Academy for Training in the Security and Safety of Civil Aviation.

Specialized training courses aim to raise the capabilities and efficiency of airport operations and safety. 128 trainees from various Libyan airports participated in the course in Tunisia.

The trainees undertook the Foreign Object Debris (FOD), Apron Safety Management, Aircraft Marshaling, and Airside Driving courses in Tunisia.

Notably, Libya is seeking to lift the ban on flights to the European Union. Libyan officials continue to hold frequent meetings with officials from Malta, Italy, and Greece, to discuss the resumption of flights with them.

The EU imposed a ban on all Libyan airlines from flying in European airspace in 2014, over safety concerns. This came after violent clashes erupted in Tripoli between rival armed groups, which destroyed the city’s international airport.

In January 2022, the European Commission renewed the ban. According to the European Commission’s website, the decision came for reasons of safety and security.

The list of banned airlines included Afriqiyah Airways, Libyan Airlines, Buraq Air, Ghadames Air Transport, Global Aviation and Service Group, Air Libya, and Petro Air.

The seven Libyan airlines are among 115 companies around the world subject to an operating ban, or operational restrictions within the European Union. This is primarily for failing to comply with international safety standards.

Recently, The Head of the Tunisia Observatory for Human Rights (TOHR), Mostafa Abdelkebir announced that two Tunisian citizens have been kidnapped in Tripoli.

On Wednesday, Abdelkebir said that the kidnapped Tunisia nationals are from Monastir, in the Zermeddine region. No group has claimed responsibility for the kidnappings, and no security statement has been issued explaining the circumstances of the incident.

Maltese Ambassador to Libya, Charles Saliba announced the launch of the inaugural flight of private Libyan airline, MedSky Airways. This took place last week, from Valletta Airport in Malta, to Misrata Airport.
