Libya-Turkey Discuss Implementation of MoUs

On Sunday, the Prime Minister of the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, held a telephone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to discuss the latest developments in Libya.

The two leaders reviewed steps to implement the Memoranda of Understanding (MoU’s) on security, maritime and military cooperation that were signed between Libya and Turkey in November 2019.

During the call, Erdogan invited Al-Sarraj to visit Turkey.

Details of the MoU’s, signed in Istanbul, have not yet been released, but media reports suggest they could extend Turkey’s continental shelf by around one-third.

This would allow Ankara to lay claim to recently discovered oil and gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean, disrupting claims made by Greece, Cyprus, and Egypt.
